The Arbëreshë are an Albanian ethno-linguistic minority present in Italy since the 15th century, following the Turkish-Ottoman occupation of Albania. They are gathered in small communities present in Abruzzo, Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, Campania, Calabria and Sicily. Due to their ethno-linguistic isolation, the Arbëreshë have kept their cultural identity unchanged in the language and traditions of folk medicine. Youth emigration is eroding this little-known and non-homogeneous cultural heritage, which remains mainly in the memory of the elderly. A peculiar characteristic, which distinguishes the Arbëreshë pharmaceutical tradition, is the use of some wild herbs as medicines. These plants are part of a unique folk pharmacopoeia that is the basis of both magical ritual practices and medicinal foods. An initial survey of the few studies carried out allows us to learn about ancient medical practices typical of the lower Adriatic area and also highlights the importance of recovering knowledge, which can represent a basis for future developments in pharmacy.
