Angetrieben von der Hoffnung auf Reichtum, Macht und ein langes, gesundes Leben, sind wir mehr denn je fasziniert von der natur- und technikwissenschaftlichen Machbarkeit des Neuen. Das vermeintlich Andere, das sogenannte vormoderne Denken, bietet sich als historische Kontrastfolie und philosophisches Korrektiv an, wenn es darum geht, die Frage nach dem Wesen des Neuen nicht vorschnell mit der Frage nach dem Wesen des technologischen Fortschritts kurzzuschliessen. Ausgehend von einer Fallstudie zu einem zentralen Werk der frühneuzeitlichen Transmutationsalchemie, dem Rosarium Philosophorum (1550), setzt sich die vorliegende Arbeit philosophisch mit Vorstellungen über die Machbarkeit und das Wesen des Neuen auseinander. Dabei spielt die ebenso vielfältige wie deutungsbedürftige Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alchemie bis ins 20. Jahrhundert, etwa bei Denkern wie Alexandre Koyré und C. G. Jung, eine ambivalente Rolle als ein Medium, in dem sich unterschiedliche moderne Kreativitätsvorstellungen historisch artikuliert haben, wodurch zugleich die Sicht auf das verstellt wurde, was die Feuer­philosophie der Alchemisten ausmachte: eine performative Metaphysik des Neuen.
