Negli anni di regno di Cosimo III de’ Medici si assiste in Toscana all’ultima grande stagione sperimentale patrocinata dai principi medicei nell’ambito delle discipline botaniche e agronomiche. Erede di una tradizione familiare ben nota in Europa sin dal Rinascimento, Cosimo investì ingenti risorse nell’orticoltura facendo tesoro delle ricerche condotte in accademie, università e spezierie granducali oltre che di quanto appreso da illustri maestri e durante i frequenti viaggi giovanili. Sostenendo studiosi quali Francesco Redi, Pietro Nati, Michelangelo Tilli e Pier Antonio Micheli, Cosimo III orientò le intuizioni e le esperienze della Nuova Scienza verso una piena maturità, favorendo uno straordinario avanzamento delle conoscenze legate al mondo vegetale. Le onerose spedizioni finanziate in terre lontane permisero a medici ed esploratori di reperire nuove varietà di erbe medicamentose, frutti e ortaggi che, affidati alle cure di giardinieri qualificati come Sebastiano Rapi, si diffusero presto nei possedimenti granducali. Fondamentali per la trasversale ricerca qui presentata sono stati documenti d’archivio spesso inediti - tra cui carteggi, diari e inventari di collezioni botaniche - approfonditi in relazione ai trattati specialistici dell’epoca e alla produzione di disegni e dipinti naturalistici molto apprezzata alla corte granducale. L’orticoltura toscana tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo si contestualizza così in una vivacissima cornice di respiro internazionale, fornendo spunti preziosi per indagare pagine di storia considerate spesso, a torto, come minori.
