Pritchard, Sara B. (Author)
Anthropocene: The Human Epoch is a provocative blend of art and documentary, but it will—and should—frustrate environmental historians and anyone even remotely aware of critical perspectives on the “Anthropocene.” I would rename the film Dangerous Beauty.Anthropocene is organized around seven topics arranged in sequential episodes: extraction, terraforming, techno-fossils, anthro-turbation, boundary limits, climate change, and extinction. The extraction episode discusses sites ranging from heavy metals processing in Siberia to lithium production in the Chilean desert; the climate change episode shows equally wide-ranging sites such as flooding in Venice, Italy, and China’s Gudong Sea Wall that protects oil fields. Anthropocene’s episodes tell a story of large-scale “human” environmental extraction, management, and transformation that have deposited unprecedented traces of “anthropogenic” impact in the geologic record, thereby calling attention to the pace and extent of “human”-caused environmental change. They emphasize the destructive role of “humanity” through technology and the widespread consequences for nonhumans, ecosystems, and, to a lesser extent, workers and marginalized people—a classic declentionist tale.
