The question of the relationships between animality and humanity are part, in different forms, of the heritage of a thought which meant to replace mythological tales with a critical approach to the diversity of aspects of the world and their possible relation to a common principle. So Plato, in the "First Alcibiades," refuses to mention the body in the definition of human, although in the "Timaeus" he refers to metempsychosis to illustrate human qualities by evoking the attributes evocative of the relationships between animals and the gravity which attaches them to the earth. Therefore, there is an irreducible originality in the way the heirs of Greek rationality approach the issue of the relationship between human life and animal life. No other culture in the world has devoted so much attention to study the difference between human and animal beings, either to remark it or, rather, to deny it. It is by focusing on this inheritance so essential to Western culture that we understand how this recurrent question was addressed through the centuries.
