Fino agli inizi dell’Ottocento il mondo delle professioni ha parlato un linguaggio esclusivamente maschile nel quale l’unico canale di accesso per le donne era rappresentato dall’ostetricia e dalla ginecologia. Nel corso del secolo questa situazione è stata, tuttavia, capovolta. Quello della levatrice, da mestiere esclusivamente al femminile, è diventato, allora, centro d’interesse del mondo medico. La realtà napoletana dell’Italia postunitaria, attraverso la documentazione dell’archivio dell’Annunziata, ha fatto emergere profili professionali e vicende di particolare interesse. È stato possibile ricostruire i percorsi umani e professionali di alcune levatrici, le loro posizioni nella gerarchia sanitaria e, infine, il rapporto con le partorienti. Tutto questo in un momento in cui, verso la fine del XIX secolo, in un clima di riassetto generale delle professioni, il rapporto tra medici e levatrici iniziava una nuova fase di collaborazione, configurando compiti, ruoli e identità differenti.
