unapi

The present essay is an attempt to move one step in this direction. It hopes to highlight some themes that more comprehensive, but as yet elusive, histories will have to address. Following brief outlines of the new Jesuit mission, the Imprimerie de T'ou-sè-wè, and Li Wenyu's early formation, the essay focuses on Li's work as a journalist, an editor, and the founder of the Jesuit periodical press in Shanghai, the area of activity in which he left his most visible mark on late Qing print and publishing culture. The range of Li Wenyu's publishing activities and the devotion with which he pursued them throughout his otherwise uneventful life distinguish him.
