Benkert, Davina (Author)
The discovery of the American continent in the 16th century was accompanied by the exploration of a new botanical world. Research into new plants fueled interest in botany in Europe and made it the leading discipline at the end of the century. This volume examines the strategies and practices of Basel scholars and pharmacists in dealing with and generating botanical knowledge. The author shows how preoccupation with exotic as well as local flora triggered a boom in Basel and led to a new kind of botanical knowledge. This made Basel botany known far beyond the city limits. Based on a diverse inventory of sources, the book draws a differentiated picture of the botanical Basel around 1600.
