En la noche del 28 de octubre de 1883, Manuel Morillo abordó a los padres de su novia en la calle San Vicente de Madrid. Tras una fuerte discusión les disparó matando a Carolina Lanzaco e hiriendo a José Fernández. Morillo, fue juzgado y condenado a cadena perpétua aunque los peritos le diagnosticaron locura epiléptica. Varios años después, tras un periplo por diversas prisiones, ingresó en el Manicomio de Leganés donde falleció en 1892. La presente monografía indaga en las relaciones históricas entre locura y criminalidad a partir del estudio del proceso judicial de Morillo. El libro analiza cómo la interacción de los distintos agentes sociales (opinión pública, juristas, médicos) que intervinieron en el proceso judicial construyeron una determinada imagen sociocultural del loco criminal en la España de la Restauración. Asimismo se presta una especial atención a los escritos de Morillo justificando su crimen, introduciendo como un elemento esencial del proceso el estudio de la subjetividad del criminal.
