Guida alla lettura del "Tentamen novae theoriae musicae" di Eulero (2019)

unapi

Euler’s "Tentamen" is a complete work of music theory, which, starting from a physical theory of sound, deduces from it a theory of the "gradus suavitatis" of musical intervals and, consequently, a set of rules for composing music. The two extremes, the theory of sound on one side and the compositional rules on the other, have been (rightly) criticized also by contemporaries, as Tartini and Rameau. Nevertheless, between these two extremes Euler develops an innovative and highly synthetic way of defining musical scales as sets of divisors of a single number – the exponent of the scale – and representing them through diagrams. In this paper, we try to highlight the peculiarities of this defnition and insert it within the history of the harmonic theory, in order to make Euler’s work a possible inspiring starting point for those who want to approach the study of the relationships between mathematics and music.
