The Samalas eruption of 1257 is classified among the largest of the last 7000 years and this was confirmed by the detections carried out in ice cores extracted in the Arctic, Antarctica and Greenland. The searches of the volcanologists made use, for the geographical and temporal identification of the eruption, as well as the natural data also of the contemporary documentary evidence, paying particular attention to medieval chronicles. This contribution focuses on the important contribution of narrative sources, also bringing out the problematic aspects associated with the exegesis of these documentary typologies. Starting from the informative potential of the narratives of Italian chroniclers, the essay discusses the different meteorological and socio-economic impacts of the Samalas eruption in the broader European context.
