"The Indulgence to the Sick in the Medical Literature of the Imperial Age: Interpretations of Aphorism ii 38" · Greek physicians of the imperial age attributed technical signifcance to the Hippocratic rule of prescribing to the sick agreeable food and drink, even if slightly more harmful than others (Aph. ii 38). The quotations of Aph. ii 38 in the works of Rufus of Ephesus and Aretaeus of Cappadocia and in Galen’s and Alexandrian commentaries to Hippocratic writings show that the aphorism was not merely intended as an invitation to be condescending to the wishes of the sick in accordance with the message conveyed by Epid. vi 4, 7 and with the aim of gaining their trust, but as a prescription based on the solid conviction that more palatable foods are better digested and more benefcial.
