The paper considers the punched card technology as part of the office-machine producing industry and the conflicts between Powers and IBM in Germany. In the US some scholars r the leading role by the US in the implementation of office machinery. It is revealed that in Germany application was on a comparative level. The paper describes various strategies of rationalization to show how punched card technology developed in Germany. The context of Lars Heide’s introduction of the keyword “information explosion” is provided. The paper closes with a survey of how female key punch operators integrate into the broader debate about female office workers.
