Film Review: Dark Waters (2019) begins like a horror movie. A group of clueless teens go for an evening swim in a place they clearly should not be—a fenced-off pond—while the song “Stop the World and Let Me Off” blares from their pickup. As most of the kids frolic in the water, one young partygoer inspects a dead fish on shore. The viewer expects the Creature from the Black Lagoon to attack, but instead the trespassers are chased away by men who emerge from the darkness in boats and hardhats, spraying a mysterious substance on the water surface. The year is 1975—and this is the starting point of a story that spans decades. It is disturbingly relevant today, examining how environmental contamination, corporate malfeasance, and government inaction can imperil communities and threaten public health on a wide scale. There is a menace lurking below the surface of this water, ready to engulf hapless swimmers and anyone it touches. The ominous tone of the opening scene leads us to a grim conclusion from the outset: we are not safe.
