In de zestiende eeuw explodeerde in heel Europa de belangstelling voor de plantenwereld. Mannen èn vrouwen trokken de natuur in op zoek naar fraaie en nog onbekende plantensoorten. Carolus Clusius was een van de spilfiguren in dit vroege onderzoek naar lokale flora. In zijn lange leven maakte hij vele reizen door bijna heel Europa en overal bestudeerde hij de plaatselijke soortenrijkdom. Daarnaast hadden ook exotische planten die Europa van overzee bereikten zijn belangstelling. 'Planten op papier', gebaseerd op de bewaard gebleven correspondentie van Carolus Clusius, gaat over een levendige en sprankelende wereld waarin natuuronderzoekers, humanisten, adel en burgers hun enthousiasme deelden over bijzondere planten en de tuinen waarin ze deze kweekten. Dit alles tegen een achtergrond van een Europa dat verscheurd was door oorlog en godsdiensttwisten.
