[DeepL translation: In the sixteenth century, interest in the plant world exploded throughout Europe. Men ánd women went out into nature in search of beautiful and still unknown plant species. Carolus Clusius was one of the pivotal figures in this early research into local flora. In his long life he made many trips throughout almost all of Europe and everywhere he studied local species diversity. In addition, exotic plants that reached Europe from overseas also held his interest. "Plants on Paper," based on the surviving correspondence of Carolus Clusius, is about a lively and sparkling world in which naturalists, humanists, nobility and citizens shared their enthusiasm for special plants and the gardens in which they cultivated them. All this against a backdrop of a Europe torn apart by war and religious strife. Exchanges of rare plants and bulbous plants, codes of conduct, letter traffic and plant transportation, as well as the turbulent publishing history of Clusius' work and his working library are discussed in detail. In his letters, Clusius wrote about his publishers of the Officina Plantiniana, about the production process of the hundreds of woodcuts in his books, and his opinions on printing. In doing so, the book takes the reader not only into a dynamic world of plant passion, but also into that of the early modern world of the book]
