La vulgarisation scientifique au Planétarium de Montréal (2015)

unapi

This article retraces the history of the Dow Montreal Planetarium, with emphasis on its attempts to popularize science. At its opening in 1966, the planetarium initially focused on adult audiences and, above all, on the space race. The planetarium then worked together with amateur astronomers and participated in the foundation of the Planetarium Association of Canada. After 1971, the planetarium gradually turned its attention to public-school audiences and diversified its shows. In the 1980s, the themes of the shows changed, while the planetarium hired graduates astronomers. In the 1990s, the creation of the consolidation of Montreal Nature Museums played a crucial role for the institution and resulted in the creation of the Société des astronomes amateurs du Planétarium de Montréal as well as the development of scientific hobby programs for young people. At the turn of the century, facing its old equipments, the planetarium bet on the diversification of its activity types and offered more and more activities outside of its walls.
