Carl Linné war der Begründer der zweiteiligen lateinischen Bezeichnungen, aber wer kam nach ihm und setzte seine Arbeit fort? In diesem Buch werden 100 Männer in kurzen Biografien vorgestellt, die in der Zeit von 1758 bis 1849 rund 500 Gattungsnamen von Säugetieren veröffentlicht haben. Von Acrobates über Pantholops, Puma und Pecari bis Vicugna und Xerus werden geschildert. In jedem Kapitel wird das historische Umfeld in Exkursen beleuchtet, man erfährt manches über Friedrich II. von Preußen, über Thomas Jefferson, und natürlich spielt Alexander von Humboldt eine gewichtige Rolle. So ergibt sich an der Nahtstelle von Zoologie und Historik ein gut lesbares Bild der Wissenschaft aus dem Blick der Säugetierkunde. In einem abschließenden Kapitel liefert der Autor einen Ausblick, wie sich die Namensgebung und die ganze Zoologie bis heute weiterentwickelt haben.
