Rotting Fish in Paradise: Putrefaction, Ecophobia, and Olfactory Imaginations of Southern California (2017)

Southern California scholars have been engaged in criticizing and analyzing the myth of the California dream for decades, yet none of these scholars have analyzed the importance of smell to that myth. Drawing from written historical accounts of the smells from two Southern California locales, this essay argues that odor has been important in the production, maintenance, and imagination of California as paradise.
