Als 22-Jähriger enthüllte Felix Klein dem norwegischen Mathematiker Sophus Lie sein immer vorhandenes Bedürfniß nach socialer Thätigkeit, welches mich nicht zufrieden läßt, wenn ich mich nur abstract mit der reinen Wissenschaft beschäftige. Die vorliegende Biographie ver­sucht, die verschiedenen Seiten des herausragenden Mathematikers, Wissenschaftsorganisa­tors und Unterrichtsreformers zu erfassen. Dazu gehören seine visionären Programme und Innovationen für mathematische Gebiete und ihre Anwendungen ebenso wie sein außerge­wöhnlicher Einsatz für ein höheres Niveau des mathematischen Unterrichts. Sein Motto lau­tete: Mathematik für alle, vom Kindergarten bis zur Hochschule, auch für Mädchen und Frauen. Er selbst nannte es sein allseitiges Programm. Mit Talent und Temperament, mit Diplomatie und Durchsetzungsvermögen konnte er viele auf seine Wege mitnehmen. Felix Klein wurde ein Weltbürger, der sich gegen Chauvinismus wandte und Studierende unabhän­gig von Nation, Religion und Geschlecht förderte. Er bahnte Wege, damit Mathematik Bestandteil der Kultur sowie ein zunehmend besseres Instrument für wissenschaftlich-technischen Fortschritt und Motor für die Wirtschaft werden konnte.
