Statecraft and the Politics of Knowledge in Margherita Sarrocchi’s Scanderbeide (2019)

unapi

Centered on the exploits of the fifteenth-century Albanian prince Scanderbeg, Margherita Sarrocchi’s epic poem La Scanderbeide (1623) reflects the influence not only of Tasso’s poetic model, but of Counter-Reformation political theory, which saw natural philosophy as key to effective statecraft and leadership. Sarrocchi argued that urgent political problems demanded of the prince a broad understanding of human nature and of the natural world. Drawing on influential political theorists such as Giovanni Botero, Sarrocchi collapses boundaries between scientific, political, and literary discourse in the Scanderbeide and demonstrates the wide reach of empirical culture in seventeenth-century Italy.
