In the last few years, a new focus on substances and materials in the historical sciences has been met with great interest. As a result, in contrast to the history of objects and things, a history of substances has developed which transports their analytical and categorical discussion into the field of the historical sciences. The central demand to pinpoint substances also affords new possibilities for the history of technology. By understanding technical developments and the shaping of technical worlds as an engagement with materiality, a substance becomes an actor. Taking the example of coal washing and its development in the German mining industry of the 19th century, this essay addresses the question of how substances and technology relate to each other. In the course of industrialization, hard coal was transformed and different relationships emerged. Coal supplied energy and became indispensable in a wide variety of areas. Thereby significant material differences became apparent which redefined the suitability of coal varieties to various processes. The deficiencies of some varieties made beneficiation relevant as a tech-nique of optimization and triggered scientific analyses of hard coals. In this sense, the development and exploration of washing as one method of coal preparation is interpreted as an exploration of the characteristics of coal and the potentials and limitations of its materiality. Substances and technology interact with each other and constitute a materials-technology network. This essay underscores the power of materiality and thus also contributes to the debate about whether or not substances have agency.
