The Enlightenment reform of the University of Coimbra decided and directed by the Marquis of Pombal, and designed by the Junta de Providência Literária appointed by him, had its formal beginning on 29 September 1772. Despite a starting point, this date is also the culmination of a social and cultural process that had begun a few decades earlier and had included debates, controversy and some preliminary achievements. Of these, it is important to highlight the reform of both elementary and pre-university studies, in the aftermath of the banishment of the Jesuits (1759); and, in the same context, the foundation of the Royal College of Nobles (1761/1765), in Lisbon, including the implementation of a scientific program (Mathematics and Physics), whose success, however, turned out to be minimal.
