Moyon, Marc (Author)
This book offers, for the first time, a study of the corpus of 'ilm al-misāḥa [science of measurement] written in Arabic in both the Muslim East and West, as well as that of its Latin extension in medieval Europe. Thanks in particular to the translations made in Andalus (territory of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule) in the 12th century, Latin scholars discovered this geometric knowledge, which was to contribute greatly to the mathematical and philosophical reflections around an emerging discipline: the practica geometriae. In this book, a special place is given to the Arabic-Latin translations since the author offers us the critical edition, the French translation and the mathematical analysis of four of them, which had never been done until now. This unpublished study lifts the veil on the characteristic elements of medieval measurement around the Mediterranean basin from the 9th century onwards. It also makes it possible to study a significant aspect of the appropriation by the Latins of science in the land of Islam which, with the work of Leonardo of Pisa, among others, goes far beyond the Arab-Latin translations.
