The paper discusses the early history of the International Congresses of Applied Mechanics, a scientific body created and developed in the interwar period, an epoch marked by deep tensions in the international scientific community. The roots of the success of ICAM are twofold: on the one hand, the informal, non official character given by the founding fathers to the congresses from the very beginning, which allowed to limit any difficulties arising from political considerations; on the other hand, the new problems arising at the intersection of established research fields, such as mathematics, physics and engineering, which demanded the establishment of a new discipline, as well as the creation of an institutional seat to define its own identity and allow the spreading of specific scientific advances.
