Ramis-Barceló, Rafael (Author)
The history of encyclopaedic knowledge in the West from antiquity to the early modern period comprises a wide variety of texts and genres, including compilations, textbooks, florilegia and dictionaries. In this article, the focus is on a specific type of encyclopaedic collections that took shape between 1550 and 1650. A veritable «encyclopaedia of learning» includes all disciplines and is not simply a compendium of liberal and mechanical arts premised on a philosophical understanding of reality. Alsted’s Encyclopaedia septem tomis distincta (1620) represents the typical embodiment of an early modern «encyclopaedia of learning», in which the collected mass of knowledge is presented as an organized whole ordered in a systematic fashion and not as an assortment of sectoral information resulting from the juxtaposition of different areas of expertise.
