Il "De brutorum loquela" di Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente (2011)

unapi

Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente's short treatise "De loquela brutorum" (1603) is the first modern attempt at describing non-human animal communication. Drawing mainly on the ideas of Aristotle and Porphyry, which he integrates with his own original insights, Fabrici attributes a true language (and not merely voice) to animals. He ascribes to them relatively sophisticated psychological operations (affectus) which go hand in hand with vocal articulations. It follows, therefore, that the difference between animals and humans, with regard to both mental activities and language, is a matter of degree rather than essence. This contribution further suggests that the Cartesian turn of the 1630s obscured the importance of Fabrici's methodological and empirical legacy, which returned to the fore only in much later times (Leroy, Darwin).
