Enrico Rogora (Author)
In the history of mathematics, the appreciation of a contribution for the development of a theory often depends on the context in which that contribution is considered. This may sometimes be determined by the desire to promote personal or nationalistic interests, but it may also conceal diferent theoretical points of view which deserve to be further analyzed and better understood. A priority claim of Henri Lebesgue against Leonida Tonelli about the origin of the direct method in the Calculus of Variations is investigated from this perspective.
