Macchio, Marina (Author)
Francesco Lana Conte de’ Terzi (Brescia 1631-1687), author of Prodromo all’arte maestra and Magisterium Naturae et Artis, was a Jesuit, man of letters, mathematician, and naturalist. His interests and studies spanned many disciplines including Chemistry, Physics, and Mechanics. He even designed an airship which earned him a great deal of admiration among his contemporaries. He was interested in experimenting with medicinal preparations and went as far as proposing universal remedies. Dottrina generale discorsiva delle mummie, preserved in the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence, is a manuscript which documents the Count’s experiments and medical observations concerning a substance which had long been mentioned in medical preparations, even if it was dismissed by official medicine and banned by the Church. In these papers we find indications on the preparation of the substance and on its secret administration to treat a host of infirmities.
