This article opens a new perspective on the last season of Joannes Eck's life. According to a long tradition of studies, in 1616, Eck, co-founder of the Lyncean Academy (1603) with Federico Cesi, Francesco Stelluti and Anastasio De Filiis, went mad. And, for this reason, he was suspended from the academic activities, on 24 March 1616 (propter defectum mentis, quod mente sit inquietus). I re-examine this issue in the light of Eck's letters to four his colleagues (Galilei, Cesi, Colonna and an anonymous), on August 1614. For Eck, as for Tommaso Campanella, the scientific value of the Galilean discoveries was inseparable from their prophetic significance: Galileo was the ambassador of the 'signa in Sole, Luna, et stellis' (Lc 21: 25), or of the imminence of the Day of Judgment. Eck, on August 1614, resigned from the Academy to lead an ascetic life. He wanted to leave his worldly life behind in order to wait for Christ's return in prayer. On 24 March 1616, the Lynceans didn't suspend him because he lost his mind. They just took note of Joannes' mind. The Latin term mens has a polysemic value: it does not mean only 'reason', but also 'intention' and 'disposition.'
