William P. Chamberlin (Author)
The Cleft-ridge Span was built in 1871-72 to demonstrate the aesthetic versatility and economic advantage of a newly patented concrete, béton Coignet, over stone masonry for small park bridges. This use may have been the first instance in which the full ornamental potential of any American-made concrete was exploited. A study of the events associated with its construction has revealed new information on the contributions of Quincy Adams Gillmore to the development of concrete technology in 19th-century America.
