The upper Venina valley, the area of investigation, is one of four valleys that form Val Venina, one of the main drainage basins of the Bergamesque Alps in Valtellina, a tributary of the upper river Adda not far from Sondrio. The site in question is close to the head of the valley where the watershed begins, the natural boundary with the upper Seriana valley (province of Bergamo). The site lies in the municipality of Piateda (Sondrio) in the Parco Regionale delle Orobie Valtellinesi. The morphology of the places is typical of upper mountain environments with valleys of glacial origin with gentle slopes at the bottom, steep slopes and modest corries in the upper parts. The quaternary terrains consist mainly of glacial deposits, slope deposits and alluvial sediment in the valley bottom areas and along the main rivers. The stony subsoil is made up of metamorphic rocks (phyllites, micaschists, paragneiss, orthogneiss) of the crystalline basement of the southern Alps, but it is also found near outcrops of lithotypes of the Permian-Mesozoic sedimentary mantle, represented here essentially by sandstones and pyroclastic rocks of the “Pizzo del Diavolo formation”. The origins of the observed deposit are believed to be closely linked to the contact between basement and mantle.
