One approach to teaching critical thinking and theorizing about it is to study great exemplars like Socrates, Galileo, and Marx, and to undertake a critical comparison and contrast of them. In this essay, I discuss this approach by reporting on a university course I have taught for more than 30 years and by formulating some conclusions and problems suggested by this kind of material. In the process, the critical-thinking practice of these three exemplars will be related to several theories of critical thinking that have been widely discussed by scholars.
