One of the most beautiful examples of the encounter between science and art is the historical pharmacy at the Incurabili, which is also remarkable as the best preserved hospital pharmacy of the old Neapolitan Realm. Artistically, the pharmacy is a masterpiece of Baroque-Rococo style. In the service of science, it is an efficient workspace for the preparation and distribution of medicines. From a historical perspective, the pharmacy gives us an intriguing glimpse into the world of the scientific elite during the Neapolitan Enlightenment. The sequence of rooms - the "controspezieria," the "sala grande," and the workrooms behind - reflects careful planning of the space which prefigures a modern pharmacy. The shelves and niches in these cabinets hold small jars and glass cruets – some still containing residues of powder or resin pharmaceuticals. Many jars are labeled indicating the pharmaceutical preparation. Some of the contents seem to predate the late eighteenth century: there are “fitobezoari” (hairballs taken from the stomachs of goats), and other minerals and animal parts (such as jaws and teeth of marine animals). These materials (which are not listed in the hospital pharmaceutical inventory from the late eighteenth century), indicate the continuation of ancient traditions of alchemy and esoteric practices.
