The De Subtilitate of Girolamo Cardano (2013)

unapi

This is a fully annotated English translation of Girolamo Cardano’s encyclopaedic De subtilitate as it appeared in 1560, the final version edited by Cardano himself (with indications of the major differences from the editions of 1550 and 1554). Cardano, a Renaissance polymath if ever there was one, ranges widely from cosmology to mineralogy, from botany and zoology to psychology and theology. Focusing on those aspects of phenomena which he takes to be the most subtle and hard to understand, Cardano’s most important and most influential work offers an incomparable survey of contemporary thought which should interest all serious students of Renaissance philosophy and learning.
