The International and Great Northern Railroad was one of the most important railroads in Texas history. Operating 1,160 miles of track within the state, it was proudly called "The Texas Railroad." Although the I & GN brought untold thousands of immigrants to Texas after the Civil War, this railroad was victimized by robber barons, who usurped five million acres of its land grant property.
