Este artículo analiza como Antonio Casares Rodríguez (1812-1888) y su hijo José Casares Gil (1866-1961) construyeron su autoridad experta en el área de la química analítica en la España contemporánea. Para ello se estudian tres aspectos clave de sus biografías: 1/ su consideración como una familia científica; 2/ la importancia de su formación y sus viajes de estudio; y 3/ la contribución de sus libros de texto. Ambos personajes fueron unos relevantes químicos españoles que escribieron diversos tratados de química general y de análisis químico, ocuparon importantes cargos institucionales �en las universidades de Santiago y Madrid, así como en el senado y en varias Reales Academias� y se especializaron en análisis de aguas. En este trabajo se muestra como sus estudios y viajes científicos, sus posiciones académicas, sus publicaciones y, en definitiva, su consideración como expertos fue facilitada, en gran medida, por sus relaciones sociales y de parentesco. Gracias a todos estos elementos Antonio y José Casares construyeron su autoridad y legitimidad científica, se convirtieron en dos de los químicos más conocidos de su país y contribuyeron a consolidar la química analítica en las universidades españolas. This article analyses how Antonio Casares Rodríguez (1812-1888) and his son José Casares Gil (1866-1961) built their expert authority in the field of analytical chemistry in modern Spain. To do this, three key aspects of their biographies are studied: 1 / their consideration as a scientific family; 2/ the importance of their training and travels of learning; and 3/ the contribution of their textbooks. Both were relevant Spanish chemists. They wrote various treatises on general chemistry and chemical analysis, held important institutional positions �in the universities of Santiago and Madrid, as well as in the Senate and in several Royal Academies� and became specialized in water analyses. This paper shows how their studies and scientific travels, their academic positions, their publications and, all in all, their consideration as experts was partially facilitated by their social and kinship relationships. Thanks to all these elements, Antonio and José Casares built their authority and scientific legitimacy, became two of the best known chemists of their country, and contributed to consolidate analytical chemistry in Spanish universities.
