Between the history of science and the history of publishing, Valérie Tesnière retraces the history of scientific publication and the springs of intellectual work, from the end of the 18th century to the digital mutations of today. “Au bureau de la revue” is an address appearing on scholarly journals in the 19th century, which designates both the scientific writing and the place of distribution. The book questions the collective behind this expression, its aspirations and the tensions that run through it. The journal aroused widespread enthusiasm in the aftermath of the French Revolution: scientific life was now structured around publication. A central element of science under construction, the journal translates the movement of research as its collective dimension. Authors and publishers join forces to strengthen the dissemination of what is becoming the favored medium for exchanges in the academic world, giving rise to a new knowledge economy. Centered on the example of French production enlightened by the international context, Au bureau de la revue deepens the roles of the various actors in the publishing chain as well as the functions and editorial forms of publications, currently being shaken up by digital technology.
