In einem in PNAS 116 (2019) publizierten Beitrag wurde der Versuch unternommen, zu zeigen, dass die ‚Justinianische Pest‘ keine größeren Auswirkungen gezeitigt und insbesondere keine Zäsur zwischen Spätantike und Frühmittelalter markiert habe. Dieser Versuch, gegen eine „maximalist position“ zu argumentieren, weist jedoch erhebliche methodische Schwächen auf, die hier herausgearbeitet werden. Zudem wird gezeigt, dass der Pest sehr wohl eine Bedeutung für den Epochenübergang zukommt, allerdings weniger unter demographischen Gesichtspunkten als wegen ihrer kulturellen, religiösen und sozialen Auswirkungen. Auch wenn neue naturwissenschaftliche Daten und Methoden eindeutige und objektive Antworten auf vieldiskutierte Fragen suggerieren und aktuell größere Aufmerksamkeit der Medien auf sich ziehen, so bedarf doch auch dieses Material – so die Schlussfolgerung – einer differenzierten Diskussion, die vorschnelle Komplexitätsreduktionen vermeidet und nur in interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit gewährleistet werden kann.
