Mit dem Blick auf das Wissen bietet dieser Band eine neue Perspektive auf die Bedingungen in Nordwesteuropa kurz vor der Industrialisierung. In einer Verbindung von Wirtschafts- und Kommunikationsgeschichte präsentiert Anja Timmermann ein Modell für die systematische Analyse von Spezialwissen in den Enzyklopädien und Fachschriften des 18. Jahrhunderts als den "Massenmedien" der Zeit. Im Zentrum der Quellenstudie steht eine der bedeutendsten und teuersten außereuropäischen Handelswaren: Der Blaufarbstoff Indigo war auf besondere Weise mit der Produktion und Zirkulation von Spezialwissen verbunden. Indigo stand im Zentrum der Herstellung modischer Kattune, dem ersten industriell gefertigten und global nachgefragten Massenprodukt. Ein "innovativer" Umgang mit Wissen seit der Jahrhundertmitte bildete dafür die Voraussetzung.
