[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… The volume tells the story of the project and construction of the wall banks of the urban Tiber, designed to defend Rome from insidious floods, in the years in which the city became the new capital of the Kingdom. With the contemporary birth of modern engineering and urban planning, the regularization of urban rivers is a theme of experimentation common to the great European cities, in which Rome plays a leading role, with the construction of the "unsinkable" walls of the Tiber. Harnessing the river between the high banks, to defend the inhabited center from the waters, is an opportunity to design a complex system of embankments - retaining walls, collectors, large landing docks and Lungotevere roads - which inserts between the building fabric and the river, a sinuous and iconic sculpture on an urban scale, solving multiple needs of the city, from sanitation, to risk prevention, to mobility, taking advantage of river navigation. The walls are a monumental presence in the urban landscape, also because they are witnesses of complex and articulated building events which, for over 50 years, have accompanied the life of modern Rome. Forgotten stories of engineers, companies, workers that can only be discovered by reading the archive papers, in particular, those of the Special Technical Office for the Tiber Refurbishment of the Civil Engineers of Rome, now preserved in the State Archives From Rome.]
