The following manuscript was produced as a preliminary study for an ongoing series of experiments to determine the chromatic properties of purple dyes and to reconstruct a variety of purple tones mentioned in antique written documents. The aim is to develop an extensive colour display of various types of purple molluscs with regard to the respective historical colour designation and fashion trends, as well as to consequently provide reference material for future comparative studies.
