During the Kennedy Presidency, broader Cold War strategy and domestic political pressures informed the administration’s response to several crises presented by the Republic of China and Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek. Throughout the Kennedy presidency, the relationship between the United States and the Republic of China deteriorated, and there was a growing recognition that rapprochement with the Communist People’s Republic of China would have to happen someday. This study looks at the domestic American factors that played into this deterioration through a struggle in the UN over Chinese representation in 1961 and a would-be crisis in the Taiwan Strait in 1962.
