Although cast-iron bridges were relatively common in Great Britain, they never achieved great popularity in the United States. In fact, the first American cast-iron bridge was not completed until 1839. It was erected in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, by Captain Richard Delafield of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. However, in spite of its technical success, the factors that led to the Brownsville bridge being built could not be duplicated in other situations. Thus, the cast-iron bridge type was never widely emulated by American engineers and slipped into relative obscurity.
