Commémorer Henri Ey (2020)

unapi

This article is on Henri Ey, who was one of the most noteworthy figures of French psychiatry between 1950 and 1970. He received many tributes and distinctions during his lifetime, such that his reputation was already well established before his death. A period of relative silence then set in, and it was not until the 20th anniversary of his death that the politics of commemorating Ey’s work began to emerge. We put forward two explanations for this. First, commemorating Henri Ey is a way of celebrating the singular path taken by French psychiatry. Second, the moral and intellectual heritage of Henry Ey stresses the importance of the ethics of the relation to mental illness and the need to have a knowledge of human beings which goes beyond their organic and cerebral nature. And lastly, commemoration of this man of international stature generates a certain nostalgia, in the light of the lost centrality of French psychiatry.
