Dieses Buch bietet die erste fundierte und kritische Darstellung der zentraleuropäischen Forschung über die Aufklärung im 20. Jahrhundert. Dabei steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Josephinismus im Mittelpunkt. Die Beiträge gehen von den einschlägigen Werken der beiden Historiker Eduard Winter (1896–1982) und Fritz Valjavec (1909–1960) aus, die während des Zweiten Weltkrieges in akademischen Kontexten Nazideutschlands erschienen sind. Die Bücher von Winter und Valjavec prägen bis heute den Erklärungsrahmen der zentraleuropäischen Geschichtsschreibung über das 18. Jahrhundert, sie liefern Schablonen und Sortieranleitungen für die Darstellung der Abfolge von Barock, Aufklärung und Restauration. Das Buch widmet sich erstmals dieser Wirkungsgeschichte Winters und Valjavecs in der Region und liefert zugleich kompakte Überblicke zur Entwicklung der Historiographie nach 1945 in Ungarn, Italien, der Tschechoslowakei, Jugoslawien und Österreich.
