Thomas E. Leary (Author)
From 1903 until 1977 the process of rolling rails at a major steel plant in Lackawanna, New York, combined elements of change and continuity that affected both job skills and technology. Prior to the mill's demolition the documentation of surviving machinery and information provided by the former boss roller facilitated preservation of important details about daily operations. These sources of data suggest that some previous interpretations of the steel industry based exclusively on documentary evidence may have exaggerated the scope of technological change and the extent of worker "deskilling."
