Professor Jędrzej Śniadecki (1768–1838) life history is intertwined with Vilnius. After his medical and chemical studies in Europe he arrived in 1797 to teach chemistry in Vilnius University. Here Śniadecki laid the foundation for science of biochemistry, he worked in Vilnius until the last day of his life. Śniadecki was way ahead of his time. He opened new horizons in organic chemistry, he did not shy away from difficult scientific decisions and all his effort went into teaching a new generation. Śniadecki created a scientific school of chemistry, it’s members spread throughout European and the rest of the world’s universities, disseminating the knowledge of chemistry and healing art. For more than 200 years Jędrzej Śniadecki’s scientific ideas and publications are remembered in many universities at lectures of chemistry, chemical technology, biochemistry, pharmacy, physiology and paediatrics. Each year in Vilnius, Lithuania (since 2012) an open seminar Lectiones Andreae Sniadecki is held in honour of Śniadecki Pupils of Vilnius University, representing various faculties, united their efforts to present to the world’s scientific community one of the most important Śniadecki’s works – the Theory of Organic Beings. Although the first volume was finished and released when the author was 36 years old (1804), our honourable scientist was returning to the phenomena of organic force until the end of his life. The third volume, including issues the first and the second volumes, was released in 1838, several months after the death of Śniadecki. The Theory of Organic Beings was translated to French and German languages, but not to English, which became and international language of science in 20th ct. For several years already we wanted to translate Śniadecki into English, and present his ideas to English speaking scientific community. We were heard, understood and supported by a company Thermo Fisher Scientific and the Head of branch in Vilnius Algimantas Markauskas. The smoothness of this project was guaranteed by communication manager Egidijus Jaseliunas. In this book we strived to follow a 1838 style of the original volume release. The edition includes original material, created by Sniadecki: the prefaces to the first and second volumes, contents and 646 paragraphs. In the third volume which was released in 1838 after the author’s death, there is a reprint of Wiadomosc o życiu i pismach Jędrzeja Śniadeckiego (News on life and works of Jędrzej Śniadecki), followed by a book subscribers list. The book also contains articles of Professor Jan Golinski (New Hampshire University) and translator Krzystof Mazurek. Author’s notes in the 1838 edition were numbered in different order in each volume. Here you will find the continuous numbering. If it was necessary – in square brackets there are additions of bibliographical data. Editor’s remarks and explanations are either on the bottom of the page (numbered in Latin alphabet letters), or presented in a glossary, along with a short biographical information about the philosophers and scientists, mentioned in the text. Since Śniadecki presented Latin terminology with a thorough explanation – terms were not repeated in the glossary. At the end of the book there is an Index of names and place names.
