Although the Romans used heavy stone rollers to compact their roads, the modern road roller dates from the 18th century. Diderot's 1777 Encyclopedia shows a horse-drawn iron roller surmounted by a box into which stones could be added to increase the weight. Others offered similar designs. Because turning a ponderous roller in a narrow street tended to tear up the crushed stone being compacted, ingenious inventors devised swivels attached to the horse shafts, so the horses could reverse direction by swinging around the stationary roller without moving the heavy iron cylinder. The rapid advance of steam technology in connection with railroads and traction engines made it inevitable that steam power would be applied to road rollers.
