La actividad minera en Cantabria se centró básicamente en la extracción de hierro y zinc de sus montes. No obstante, la comarca de Campoo, al sur de la región, nunca fue rica en estos minerales, sino en otros como el cobre, el lignito y el carbonato de magnesia. Como en otros lugares de la región, el comienzo de la actividad minera en la comarca nos remite a la “fiebre minera” de mediados del siglo XIX, aunque el lignito también fue explotado anteriormente; su final coincide con los últimos años de la década de los setenta del siglo XX. El lignito extraído se dedicó fundamentalmente al abastecimiento de las fábricas de vidrio campurrianas, si bien también se destinó al mercado desde la I Guerra Mundial. La minería del cobre tuvo una trayectoria intermitente como consecuencia de la escasa riqueza de los criaderos, que tan sólo hacían rentable su explotación en épocas alcistas de los mercados. Finalmente, el carbonato de magnesia fue explotado con gran intensidad durante las dos primeras décadas del siglo XX, hasta el agotamiento de las minas.
